WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.-Four weeks after taking over as president of Sleep Innovations Inc., Gary Matthews watched as Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and with it much of the American petrochemical processing industry, driving up the costs of his key raw material, viscoelastic foam, as much as 70 percent.
It was not exactly the warm welcome he was hoping for, but seven months later, Matthews says things are starting to calm down a bit and the company can get back to what it's done best: innovating and growing as fast as any company has ever done in the home textiles business.
