Benjamin Franklin is widely regarded as the father of printing in the United States; this recognition is not without merit. He started as a printer's apprentice at age 12 and opened his own print shop at the age of 22. Ben Franklin was appointed the official printer of Pennsylvania, the public printer for Delaware, New Jersey, and Maryland, and helped to establish newspapers not only in Pennsylvania, but also in New York, Connecticut, and the West Indies.
