Salt has played an important role in the development of human history. In fact, no substance other than water has been used with such regularity as salt. For example, its use as a condiment and agent in "... cleaning, bleaching, dyeing, degreasing, dehairing and softening leather ..." is known world wide. (1) The extent of its use by the aboriginal inhabitants of Canada is difficult to ascertain. The oral history record reveals very little about the indigenous use of salt, while the early historical record of organizations such as the Hudson's Bay Company provide only brief mention.
