TAIPEI, April 6 Asia Pulse - The economic race between Taiwan and South Korea took a new twist in 2005, with South Korea overtaking Taiwan in per capita gross domestic product (GDP) for the first time.
While government officials hastily attributed the change primarily to a greater appreciation of the Korean won against the U.S. dollar compared to the rise in the new Taiwan dollar's exchange rate with the greenback during the year, local economists said the government should not overlook South Korea's rapid economic growth and should instead work out effective strategies to catch up.
