Black students are catching up with Whites on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and educators say the performance by the Class of '93 may signal the end of a testing slump that has lasted 25 years.

College-bound seniors scored an average 424 on the verbal part of the test, up a point from the average for the previous year's graduating class. The math average was 478, up two points, said officials at the College Board, a non-profit education group that sponsors the test.
