Apr. 7--More clever than brilliant and more ambitious than well-executed, Kevin Willmott's mockumentary, C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America, is built not just on a troubling thought, "What if the South had won the Civil War?" but on the idea that yes, in fact, it did.
Willmott, an African-American film (not history) professor in Kansas, uses that thesis for a sometimes incisive, sometimes amateurish look at race in America, the things we do and tolerate as a nation that are really no different from an America ruled by unrepentant slave-holders.
