Apr. 7--The head of the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad has gone on the offensive to combat claims that the railroad's proposed upgrade and expansion project threatens public safety in Rochester.
DM&E President and CEO Kevin Schieffer, in a letter to Mayo Clinic on Thursday, called clinic leaders "irresponsible" for arguing that a rail upgrade, and subsequent traffic increase, would increase the risk of a derailment, possibly including a hazardous materials spill.
Rather, Schieffer said, replacing the rails through Rochester would make them safer. In the past 10 years, the railroad has had 36 track-caused ...
