Apr. 8--Segregation kept Frank P. Hairston Jr. from attending Duke University, but he didn't let that stop him from earning degrees and eventually becoming a teacher and principal at Hempstead public schools for more than 20 years. Hairston, 80, who died from pneumonia on March 20, had spent his last years at the Nassau Extended Care Center, next to Prospect School, where his Hempstead teaching career began. From his room, he enjoyed watching children in the playground.
