The drive across North Park, from Walden toward Gould, seemed like traveling across a snow-dusted moonscape: Vast stretches of unspoiled land creased into low-lying humps and swales (cold-climate sand dunes, we later learned). It was not a setting that spoke of backcountry skiing.
