Virginia's beekeepers lost about 40 percent of their domesticated honeybee hives last year to disease, pets and cold snaps. Some in South Hampton Roads saw even greater losses.

Great Bridge beekeeper Bob Ferguson lost 10 hives. "I only have three hives right now," he said Friday.

The loss of hives didn't just affect the availability of local honey from the Piedmont to Pungo. It also made it difficult for the commonwealth's farmers to find enough movable bee hives to pollinate their crops and increase yields.
