Fortunately for Maureen Stapleton, and the rest of us, she could.
Stapleton, who died Monday, was a specialist in harried, troubled, confused, vulnerable women who often were groping for a side of life that was not theirs. She just as easily could play tough, no-nonsense women in comedy or drama. She won an Oscar, two Tonys and an Emmy but was, more often than not, seen shuffling about Broadway in a baggy housedress and bedroom slippers.
I once got between Stapleton and a buffet line.
