THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT

When they look at me, they say, 'That broad had better be able to act.'"

Fortunately for Maureen Stapleton, and the rest of us, she could.

Stapleton, who died Monday, was a specialist in harried, troubled, confused, vulnerable women who often were groping for a side of life that was not theirs. She just as easily could play tough, no-nonsense women in comedy or drama. She won an Oscar, two Tonys and an Emmy but was, more often than not, seen shuffling about Broadway in a baggy housedress and bedroom slippers.

I once got between Stapleton and a buffet line.
