Apr. 9--If not for Oklahoma City's water supply, a dozen metro area communities would be dry.

Forward thinking by Oklahoma City leaders 50 years ago secured access to enough water to quench the entire state's needs for more than six months without rain.

But it costs money to maintain, and customers must pay their share of the bills.

Members of the Oklahoma City Council last week decided to raise customer water rates by 3.75 percent each year through 2009.

Those communities that buy all or some of their water from Oklahoma City also will have to pay the higher rates.
