Drugs prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were the topic of discussion at the February meeting of the FDA's Drug Safety and Advisory Committee, on which I serve as the consumer representative. The agency's concern was sparked by reports of sudden death, heart attack, and other cardiovascular events occurring in people who take drugs for ADHD. Adderall, Concerta, Strattera and Ritalin are the most prescribed. An estimated 2.5 to 3 million children and 1.5 million adults take these drugs. In recent years there has been considerable controversy about whether ADHD, a non-medical condition, is over-diagnosed and over-treated with drugs.
