THE QUALITY OF SEMEN in healthy men has deteriorated over the past 50 yr. (1-3) In an increasing number of studies, investigators have suggested that pharmacological, nutritional, and environmental factors may contribute to the overall decline in sperm, and, therefore, to a growing number of infertile couples. (4-7) Martin Du-Pan et al. (8) evaluated potential etiological factors in 350 patients who suffered from primary or secondary sterility (i.e., > 1 yr without fertilization), and they attributed 12% of the infertile cases to environmental factors (e.g., alcohol, drugs).
