CHLORINE DIOXIDE (CI[O.sub.2]) is an alternative solution to chlorine ([Cl.sub.2]) in drinking water treatment. It is an excellent disinfectant that has the advantage of improving the taste of water and preventing the unpleasant odor associated with chlorination. Use of CI[O.sub.2] also reduces the production of the chlorination by-products, trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), (1,2) which are suspected to be carcinogenic and possibly teratogenic to humans. (3) Furthermore, use of CI[O.sub.2] might be advantageous in controlling Cryptosporidium oocysts, which are resistant to chlorine. (4)
