TENS of thousands of people clutching candles filled St Peter's Square in the Vatican City last night to mark the first anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II.

It was a scene that resembled the days before his passing when pilgrims from around the world prayed underneath his studio apartment windows.

Polish flags fluttered in the cool evening breeze, the candles twinkled and a choir sang hymns during an hour-long prayer vigil that was to culminate with a blessing by Pope Benedict XVI at the exact time of John Paul's death at 9.37pm (2037 BST).
