Translation of scientific research to health care providers, public health practitioners, and the lay public is an important goal with a high priority. Other terms besides "translation," such as "diffusion," "information sharing," "knowledge transfer," and "dissemination," are used to convey this concept of translation. However, long before the term "translation" entered popular use, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) was aware of this need. This led Dr. David Rall, the institute's second director, to establish the bimonthly journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP).
