Onondaga Nation Chief Irving Powless was a driving force for four decades behind the nation's efforts to prepare a land claim lawsuit against New York.

But last winter, Powless suffered a stroke at home that left him paralyzed on one side and unable to speak.

When the Onondagas sued New York just weeks later, the absence of the hospitalized Powless at that historic moment caused other Onondagas to choke up with emotion.
