Article: Looking backward into the future. (Column)

As I begin to write this column, my wife told me of the radio broadcast relating Julio Gallo's death.

While we can say that, at 83, such an event was not unexpected, it certainly is sad news to many, many people including, of course, myself.

Mountains of praise will come forth, and many tributes, but in my opinion, he will be best known and remembered for his grape pricing policies. Despite the massive buying power of his firm, Julio, nonetheless, as the front man, offered very fair and equitable prices. Moreover, he encouraged the farmers to grow better quality grapes and better varieties. A "double whammy" that no doubt led to Hearty Burgundy.
