Landsat 6, the first unclassified, non-military payload to be launched on a Martin Marietta Corp. Titan 2 booster, remained unaccounted for as we went to press Friday, leaving observers to wonder whether the $220 million remote-sensing satellite ever made it into orbit.
The official word coming from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the companies involved in Landsat 6: "We don't know." The Earth Observation Satellite Co. (EOSAT), a joint venture of Martin Marietta and Hughes Aircraft Co., manages Landsat 6 for NOAA. Martin built the satellite and the booster.
