Things are looking up for the first time in many years, says John Heimlich, Vice President and Chief Economist of the US Air Transport Association. In the final analysis, 2005 can be summed up in two words: fares and fuel. Says Heimlich, you cannot fill half a plane, or even three-quarters of a plane, with 1988 fare levels and expect to cover the cost of $72-per-barrel jet fuel. He estimates that passenger revenue is about $25 billion per year below where it ought to be based on the historical relationship between spending on air travel and the US economy. ...
