Henri Langlois (1914-1977) is a figure of great importance in the history and culture of film. He founded the Cinematheque Francaise before World War II and headed it for decades, providing a revelatory education in film for the French and, indeed, the world, most notably for the influential young critics who would become the filmmakers of the French New Wave--Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer, Chabrol, and the rest.
