When I went to library school, what excited me about the profession was the new technologies for doing research and answering reference questions. It definitely wasn't the intricacies of purchasing information resources. I was intrigued by the possibilities offered by online searching and relished the ability to search through many years of periodical articles in a vast array of subjects with just a few keystrokes.
Although how special librarians go about the electronic research process these days has expanded well beyond what Dialog offered back then, I remain enamored of the new technologies that pop up all around me every day, such as Web 2.0.
