EchoStar Communications became a very big company by selling a small satellite dish.
Its path has taken it to the top of this year's Colorado 50, the Rocky Mountain News' fourth annual measure of the state's corporate community.
EchoStar was a top-five finisher for two of the past three years because it's consistently one of the state's biggest companies in annual revenue, profits and market value.
It's risen to the top this year because it also happened to post the biggest gain in earnings per share of any of the companies in this year's rankings.
