A LONG time ago, when I was a student and had little money, I decided to become a vegetarian. It was cheaper, I reasoned, and better for me. I lived next to a health food shop in Bristol. Every day I would nip down and get some Quorn concoction and a carton of vanilla flavoured soya dessert.
At Christmas, while everyone else tucked into turkey, my mother made me nut roast and vegetarian gravy.
