Apr. 18--Mayor Bill Mattiace couldn't resist the comment Monday, just moments before the Las Cruces City Council approved an economic development project that conveys 11.5 acres at the West Mesa Industrial Park to Rocket Racing League.

"Gentlemen, start your engines," Mattiace deadpanned.

The council's approval of a Local Economic Development Plan will enable the fledgling Rocket Racing League to be based in Las Cruces. To open its international headquarters, the league will create at least 30 new jobs with annual salaries 20 percent higher than the average salary in Do[+ or -]a Ana County.
