I. Relationship and Interrelationship
Jewish-Christian dialogue in modern times has reached great heights when it has occurred between a great Jewish thinker and a great Christian thinker. One recalls Moses Mendelssohn and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Hermann Cohen and Wilhelm Herrmann, Franz Rosenzweig and Eugen Rosenstock, Abraham Joshua Heschel and Reinhold Niebuhr. To this illustrative list should be added the names of Martin Buber and Paul Tillich.
Buber and Tillich, both of whom died in 1965, knew each other for over forty years, beginning in Germany in the tumultuous period after World War I. Although they were contemporaries, Buber (b. 1878) being only ...
