In the course of Beowulf's fight against the dragon, both the Geatish king and the dragon suffer fatal wounds. In Beowulf's final hour, only Wiglaf is with him:
He da mid pam madmum maerne pioden
dryhten sinne driorigne fand
ealdres aet ende, he hine eft ongon
waeteres weorpan od paet wordes ord
