During the March Break, my family travelled to the state of Kentucky. We wanted not only to escape the cold and unsettled climate of southern Ontario, but also to conduct a pilgrimage to the beautiful green hills of Gethsemani and the tranquility of the Trappist monastery south of Louisville, Kentucky.
Perhaps by coincidence, or maybe through divine providence, this was not only the same time of year when Thomas Merton first traveled to this region of America, it was also when the world was in the unsettled environment of war. Merton was retreating from the pressing conflict of World War II in Europe.
