Members of a Naperville church congregation flocked to Tuesday's city council meeting to oppose plans to realign Jefferson Avenue over the DuPage River.

"Why can't we allow this slight curve and leave this as it is?" asked Ann Dugan, a member of Church of the Brethren who also lives nearby. "We were told it was for safety reasons, but when we pressed we were told there were no accidents there."

Replacing the 44-year-old bridge would require the acquisition of some of the church's land, something the city's legal team thought was agreed upon.
