Despite the ongoing recession's crippling blow to architecture and other construction-related fields, Southland architects are finding work in health care. The areas of greatest opportunity appear to be remodeling and expanding existing hospitals and health care facilities, industry sources said.

Architects flocking to health care is not a new or unexpected phenomenon during a recession. The same trend has appeared, to a lesser extent, during several previous cyclical downturns in Los Angeles.
