It was former Gov. Lee Dreyfus who first said that Madison was 35 sqare miles surrounded by reality.
It was meant as a smart aleck comment at a press conference to dismiss some Madison idiosyncrasy, but it caught on, especially with conservatives who insist that the capital city is completely different politically than the rest of the state.
