NIACHLOR is an acronym abbreviation for Niagra Caustic Chlorine, a 50/50 partnership of Du Pont Chemicals Co. and Olin Chemical Co. The plant produces 660 tons of chlorine per day, with hydrogen and 1.1 tons of caustic resulting as byproducts.
The heart of the manufacturing process comprises 12 membrane cells which operate on an electrolytic principle somewhat similar to that of an automotive storage battery. But unlike an automotive battery, the cells are huge structures served at 138 kV. Brine is introduced as feedstock into the cells and is reduced by electrolysis into chlorine, caustic, and hydrogen.
