Top Air Force officials believe the service will soon begin its long- awaited competition for a new tanker aircraft, but added a winner will not be selected until the middle of next year.

Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne told the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee yesterday the service would release a request for information from contractors "in the very near future" for replacing its tanker fleet-- effectively beginning a multi-billion competition. He said the service would likely release a formal request for proposals in September and then choose a winner next year.
