ASHEVILLE, NC.--Chase Pickering was 10 when his grandmother treated him to a trip across the country to the San Diego Zoo. "When each grandkid turns 10, she takes them on a vacation anywhere in North America," says Chase, now 18. The zoo visit not only "sealed a bond" between Chase and his grandmother but also ignited in him a lasting fascination with wild animals.
Two years later, on another trip, this time to Costa Rica, Chase brought a camera and snapped pictures of monkeys and iguanas. "The images turned out great, and I thought to myself, 'Hey, I can do this!'" he says.
