TURKEY is taking its railways seriously again. Having acknowledged that Turkish State Railways (TCDD), which celebrates its 150th anniversary in September this year, has been neglected for 60 years, the government is now pouring in the money for major projects and improvements.
Current investment for 2006 is more than five times the amount allocated for railway improvements in 2002, and, during the coming decade, investment of about $US 10 billion will produce the long-dreamed-of Bosphorus rail crossing plus a number of high-speed lines.
