As a child growing up in South Carolina, I remember running around the neighborhood with other kids during long summer days, playing whatever games we could think of. While I had old favorites like "Tag" and "Red Rover" down to a science, the one game I always had trouble with was "Mother, May I?"

Remember "Mother, May I?" It was the game where a kid would be the "mother" and the other kids would be the "children." Each child would line up at a particular point and take turns asking "mother" if he or she could take a certain number of steps toward her.
