During the 1960s, nuclear physicist George Greenlees needed a more sophisticated atomic accelerator to conduct his research at the University of Birmingham in England. So he designed one himself.

Greenlees, who accepted a professorship at the University of Minnesota in 1964, died of natural causes in Wayzata on March 16. He was 83.

Greenlees' work on an optical model of the atomic nucleus and on the search for the so-called fat atom "gave him world recognition," said his colleague John Broadhurst, a University of Minnesota professor of physics.
