But when you're the heir apparent at Notre Dame, you're afforded a few liberties.
Jimmy Clausen from Oaks Christian High of Westlake Village, one of the most highly touted high school quarterbacks in years, announced his decision to attend Notre Dame on Saturday - at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.
Clausen, whose two older brothers, Casey and Rick, played at Tennessee, chose the Irish over USC and South Carolina. He said Irish coach Charlie Weis, who helped turn Brady Quinn into a record-setting quarterback, was the biggest factor in his decision.
