African National Congress President Nelson Mandela, whose fight to end apartheid in South Africa made him an international hero, was named a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
The 75-year-old Mandela, along with F.W. de Klerk, were selected for their combined effort "to peacefully end apartheid," said the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which presents the award that comes with an $825,000 stipend.
"From their different points of departure," said the Nobel committee, "Mandela and de Klerk have reached agreement on the principles for a transition to a new political order based on the tenet of "one man-one vote."
