Apr. 27--George Gascon is Hispanic, but he's not applying to be the police chief for Mesa's Hispanics. "I'm applying to be the chief of police of Mesa, which means I would be the chief of police for everyone," said Gascon, currently assistant chief in the Los Angeles Police Department.
Born in Cuba but raised in Los Angeles, the 52-year-old Gascon is the only Hispanic among the four semifinalists for the position of chief. His presence on the list can't help but carry the message that city leaders are acknowledging demographic reality.
