The term "hypermedia" covers a number of different and wide-ranging approaches to information. In its simplest form--often called "hypertext"--hypermedia is online text and graphics that allow users to select information details from an overview. Hypermedia also encompasses presentations that mix text, still graphics, videotape, animated graphics, and audio. The essential element that distinguishes it from other mixed media is the user's ability to choose information paths and segments. Hypertext is a subset of hypermedia, limited to text and pictures, with simple navigation aids.
