CLEVELAND - Craig Hansen moved a step closer to joining the Red Sox at some point this season when he was promoted yesterday from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Hansen, 22, opened the season with the Sea Dogs because the organization felt it would be the best team to adhere to a program of pitching multiple innings, but the Eastern League batters were no competition for the hard-throwing right-hander. He was 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in five games in Portland and allowed only one run on four hits in 11 innings, while striking out 12 batters.
