Apr. 28--PANAMA CITY -- After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August, Port Panama City handled container ships for the first time and a burst of activity boosted tonnage numbers for general and bulk cargo.

With the increasing imports and exports moving through the port, a nationally known provider of freight transportation and supply chain management has set up a new distribution center here.

Cookeville, Tenn.-based Averitt Express opened one of its 18 PortSide Distribution Centers in Panama City last fall as part of a strategy to expand its international services for customers.
