Article: Old school collides with new economy.(Letter to the editor)

Last week I decided to get some new heels on a pair of shoes.

Letting my fingers do the walking, I called the two shoe repair stores listed on Mira Mesa Boulevard. They have both closed. So my friend told me where she takes her shoes in Poway, and as I was going that way, I stopped by--but it had also closed.

The other local repair stores are advertised as being in Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta and Del Mar Highlands, but I haven't called them yet, because it occurs to me it would be easier and not much more expensive to buy a new pair of shoes (factoring in gas at $2.50 a gallon).

Being from the Old School, I have trouble embracing ...
