The tradition of writing poetry in Latin, which had flourished in England and other European countries during the Elizabethan and Jacobean period, was still alive during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Verse composition continued to be taught in the public schools and universities to a reasonably high level, and there was still a market for books of Latin verses. Poets famous for their English poetry, such as Gray and Dr Johnson, also produced a corpus of poetry in Latin. ...
