This volume forms a welcome companion to John Woodhouse's admirable 1998 biography Gabriele d'Annunzio, Defiant Archangel, reviewed in MLR, 94 (1999), 570-71. In it twelve essays edited or adapted from papers published over two decades are brought together in a coherent sequence.
