Artist and interior decorator Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of jeweler Charles Tiffany, in the late 1870s created his first stained glass window. The timing was perfect. Thomas Edison in 1879 produced a reliable, long--lasting source of light in a glass bulb.

Tiffany, who collaborated with Edison to light New York's Lyceum Theater, was enchanted with the effect electric light had on his designs. But his work stood on more than one cutting edge. Rich with natural themes-dragonflies, flowers, and vines-the lamps represented the cusp of the Art Nouveau movement.
