If you're getting chubby around the middle, you'd do well to deflate that spare tire for your brain's sake. New research has linked excessive abdominal fat with increased risk of stroke, and there's evidence it may also be implicated in depression and Alzheimer's disease (AD).

It has long been observed that packing on pounds around the waist and chest--a type of fat distribution associated with a condition called metabolic syndrome--can take a toll on the body. A tubby torso is strongly associated with high blood pressure, high insulin levels, high blood sugar and unhealthy cholesterol levels, factors which can increase risk for heart disease and diabetes.
