ONCE again, television images are shaping American foreign policy. This time chilling pictures were not from Vietnam but from Somalia: the corpse of an American soldier being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, and shaky videotape of a badly bruised American pilot being questioned by his Somali captors. The raid that went badly wrong on October 3rd left at least 12 Americans dead and 78 wounded. Almost as serious was the damage to America's policy in Somalia, and perhaps beyond.
